A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar from the smallest scale to the largest. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop.

Emergent strategy is a philosophy and practice for navigating and shaping change by learning from the natural world’s principles of adaptation and interdependence. It is highly collaborative, adaptive, intuitive, and flexible as a practice. Emergent Strategy invites us to learn from the swirling patterns in our ecosystems in order to better understand and influence them as they happen.

On this season premiere episode, meet your new co-host, Billy Almon! Billy is an astrobiofuturist (which you’ll hear more about later), and one of his passions and expertise is in the art of biomimicry. Billy lays out the history of this ancient process, how it's been instrumental in connecting birds to technology, and how he uses it in his own work. Later, he’ll speak with writer, activist and social justice facilitator adrienne maree brown! adrienne walks us through the unique way she utilizes biomimicry, as explained in their book, Emergent Strategy: Shaping Change, Changing Worlds. Diving deeper into the power of fractals as a biomimetic example, we explore its connection to the natural world and how it can guide us through pivotal life upheavals.

This column will be a space to ask these questions and share what I am seeing and feeling as potential answers or directions. What do we mean when we say abolition, accountability, interdependence, community, liberation, and compelling futures?

In the Loving Corrections chapter excerpted here, adrienne delves into the world of philanthropy.

Another year, another fractal! Autumn and adrienne revel in the majesty their respective weirdness in the artistic process and how improvisation and structure co-mingle.

The sisters describe how and why they build altars for creation and detail recalibrated writing nooks, work laptops, writing in the tub and car, vision boards, doodles for the self and bringing their creative and familial ancestors into the mix.

The sisters nerd out on project (and self!) management, spreadsheets, procrastination, saving your work and ensuring you have adequate support for the art you're making.

Another fractal! The sisters dive into the intricacies of storyboarding and structuring in their writing process and how visual mapping can aid in organizing thoughts and ideas. Also, how to balance structure vs. chaos.

In this episode, the first in a mini-series on creative process, the sisters explore the importance of making space for writing, both physically and emotionally, and share personal practices that have been helping them inch to the finish line on their respective book projects.

Our fractal series continues as the sisters delve into the challenges of writer's block and share their strategies to overcome it. They discuss the interval method as a technique to manage writing sessions, the importance of external feedback and how crises impact creativity.
